In order to access the internet from a dorm room the following is required:
1) Laptop or Desktop Computer - The operating system must be a minimum of Microsoft Windows Vista or XP. All prior versions of Windows (2000, Me, 98, etc...) will be unable to connect to the internet. Macintosh computers can acquire internet access, but may require special assistance from the IT staff.
2) Network Interface Card - The computer must have an NIC card to plug into the network. This looks like a large telephone cord receptacle which is located either in the back or on the side of the computer. Most computers today are sold with an NIC card installed.
3) Ethernet Cord - The computer must be plugged into the network receptacle located in the wall of the dorm room by a category 5 Ethernet cable. Ethernet cords are available for purchase at the bookstore or at the Louisburg Wal-Mart.
Computer Assessment Procedure
Once the computer is plugged in to the wall with an Ethernet cord, open the web browser (i.e. Internet Explorer) and the Louisburg College Campus Portal page should appear. During the initial attempt to navigate to any other location on the web (Google, Facebook etc...), the computer will undergo an assessment procedure to ensure safe internet browsing by checking for up to date anti-virus software.
- If anti-virus software is not detected, the browser is directed to a page in which free anti-virus software can be downloaded and installed.
- If anti-virus software is detected but the anti-virus definitions are out of date, the browser is directed to take corrective action.
Once anti-virus software is installed and up to date, the computer will pass the assessment process and is free to go anywhere on the web.
